Traveling long distances in economy can be really exhausting but Air New Zealand is changing things up. They are launching a new sleep pod concept for economy flyers on their long flights. Here is a quick breakdown of what you can expect from these new beds starting this year.
The Skynest Is Launching In November On Specific Flights

Air New Zealand is rolling out these six individual bunks on their Boeing 787 9 Dreamliner planes going between New York and Auckland. You can actually start booking these cool little sleep pods on May 18 for flights taking off in November and beyond.
Booking Costs Around Four Hundred Ninety Five Dollars

You do not get the bed for the whole flight because they split the time into four hour sessions for 495 dollars each. It might sound like a lot of money to some people but getting real sleep on a super long flight could definitely be worth it.

Each Bunk Comes With A Full Length Mattress
You might think a pod would be cramped but the airline says the mattress actually feels way more spacious than it looks. They also give you a nice warm blanket so you can get really cozy and try to forget you are flying through the sky.
You Get A Privacy Curtain To Hide Away

Nobody really wants people staring at them while they drool in their sleep so each bed has its own privacy curtain to pull shut. This simple addition makes the whole setup feel like a tiny little hotel room floating in the clouds which is pretty funny but awesome.
Charging Ports And Reading Lights Are Built Right In

You can charge your phone using the individual USB A and USB C outlets while you relax in your private space. There is also a personal reading light and cooling ventilation so you do not wake up sweating profusely in the middle of a good nap.
Passengers Receive A Special Skincare And Amenity Kit

The airline is throwing in an amenity kit that has an eye mask and ear plugs plus some skincare products by Aotea and a dental kit. It is a really nice touch that helps you freshen up before going back to your regular economy seat smelling like mint.
Safety Features Like Seat Belts Are Ready For Turbulence

You do not have to worry about getting tossed around if the plane hits a bumpy patch because there is a seatbelt right inside the bunk. They also put a handy crew call button in there just in case you need help or get stuck trying to find your socks in the dark.
You Can Actually Choose Which Bunk You Want To Book

The CEO mentioned that giving people sleep options in economy seems a bit indulgent but it is the next natural step for flying. Passengers get to pick their specific bunk when they book so you can decide if you want the top or bottom bed like adult summer camp.
They Actually Do Not Know How This Will Perform Yet

The airline knows this is a huge gamble and they are totally open to failing because they want to test and learn new things. If the sleep pods are out of your budget they also have a Skycouch option where you can turn a row of normal economy seats into a flat couch anyway.
