It Is Not A Normal Tunnel
When you hear about a massive tunnel you probably picture cars or trains zipping through the dark. This giant underground tube actually carries fresh drinking water instead of traffic and it supplies almost half of the water for New York City every single day.
The Insane Length And Depth
This massive concrete pipe runs a total of 85 continuous miles making it the longest one in the entire world. It also plunges down to about 2500 feet below the surface in some areas which is just completely mind blowing when you think about it.
Built A Long Time Ago
Workers actually started digging this massive hole way back in 1937 and they did not finish the main part until 1953. They had to drill through solid bedrock using dynamite and drills long before we had the super advanced machines we use today.
They Made It Bombproof
Because the construction happened right around the time of the Second World War the engineers decided to reinforce the concrete walls to make them bombproof. That was a really smart move to protect such a vital lifeline for millions of people living in the city.
The Source Of The Water
The tunnel pulls its water from places like the Rondout Reservoir out in the Catskill Mountains and sends it straight down to Yonkers. From there it feeds into another reservoir before it finally makes its way to the taps inside city apartments.
Millions Of Gallons Are Leaking
Even though the structure is incredible it has been leaking for decades and losing around 20 million gallons of water every single day. The biggest leaks are located right near the Hudson River and out in Ulster County.
A Billion Dollar Bypass Plan
To fix those massive holes the city started building a brand new bypass tunnel in 2013 with a price tag of around one billion dollars. They finished digging the new section in 2022 but they still have to connect it to the main line soon.
Shutting The Water Off Safely
Connecting the new bypass means they have to shut the whole main tunnel down for a while without drying out the entire city. They plan to rely on backup systems and lower the nearby reservoirs to collect mountain rain while the main pipe is empty.
