Fast food has changed a lot over the years and I always wondered what a classic 1970s McDonald’s burger tasted like. I finally decided to order a custom burger to recreate that retro magic. The results were honestly so good that they completely blew my mind. Here are ten things that made this throwback bite so incredible.
The Request Was Simple

I basically asked the crew to press the beef patty down hard on the grill to get a really dark sear. They were super nice about it and it gave the meat that crispy edge you do not see much anymore.
A Heavier Hand With The Seasoning

Back in the day, fast food places were not shy about using a lot of salt and black pepper on the grill. I asked for extra seasoning and it really brought out the rich beef flavor that can sometimes get lost today.
The Bun Was Lightly Steamed

I skipped the heavy toasting they do now and asked them to just let the bun warm up from the heat of the meat. This made the bread super soft and pillowy which totally reminded me of old school burger wrappers.
Those Classic Little Onions

McDonald’s still uses those tiny rehydrated onions but I asked for a double scoop to get that strong punchy flavor from the seventies. The sharp onion bite mixed perfectly with the warm bread and the savory meat.
The Cheese Melted Completely

Because the patty came straight off a really hot grill the American cheese just completely melted into a gooey layer. It wrapped around the meat perfectly instead of just sitting cold on top of the burger.
A Different Mustard To Ketchup Ratio

I feel like older burgers relied way more on mustard so I asked for extra mustard and just a tiny drop of ketchup. This gave the sandwich a nice tangy kick that cuts right through the heavy grease of the beef.
No Fancy Lettuce Or Tomatoes

To keep things authentic to the basic seventies menu I made sure to leave off any extra fresh vegetables. Keeping it simple meant I could actually taste the actual burger instead of just eating a salad on a bun.
The Smell Was Nostalgic

When I unwrapped the paper it immediately smelled like a classic diner grill instead of a modern fast food kitchen. That smell of heavily seared beef and warm bread made my mouth water before I even took a single bite.
The Texture Was Super Juicy

All that extra searing trapped the juices inside the patty while keeping the outside crispy and firm. Every single bite was a perfect mix of soft bun and crunchy meat which is exactly how a burger should be.
It Left Me Wanting More

I honestly think this custom retro order tastes way better than the standard items on the menu right now. It made me say I am done because I really do not want to go back to eating the modern versions ever again.
