How to Wash and Store Blueberries for Maximum Freshness

Fresh blueberries are sweet, delicate and highly perishable and this means that a lot of difference can be created depending on the length of days they are in good condition as long as they are handled properly. One can simply diminish the shelf life of various products by keeping them moist, over closing the lids, or prewashing them without careful consideration. Such small mistakes lead to excess moisture that leads to moulds and mushy tender berries. When they are treated in the right way, blueberries would be firm and stay sweet and fresh to last a much longer duration. Airflow, dryness, mild handling and temperature are the most essential ones. 

Look at Roses before the Vine

During storing, inspect and divide blueberries on a plate and then store. Eat off those which are tender, wrinkled, dripping liquor, or mouldy. It is easy to contaminate other berries with rotten berries. 

Keep Them Dry Before Storage

Moisture is the greatest spoilage causing agent. It is not good to wash blueberries and keep them above refrigerators since water increases the rate of molds. Surface surface protection is by natural coating of the surface. 

Use a Container With Airflow

Tight containers trap moisture and lead to condensation leading to mold. Instead put them in the package with holes or transfer them to a shallow container. 

Ready the Container using Paper towel

Look up the bottom of the container just to place a piece of paper towel to absorb some of the moisture. Blueberries also discharge some moisture that is natural even when they are not being washed. The towel will not condense that will be on the fruit. 

Mixed Up in the Fridge

Low temperatures inhibit bacterial decay and growth. Refrigerate the blueberries in the refrigerator ideally in the refrigerator in the crisper part where humidity is absolutely balanced. They should not be stored in the fridge door where the temperature continues to fluctuate. 

Avoid Stacking Too Deeply

The stacking of berries causes pressure which breaks the berries at the bottom causing water to be released. Place in a shallow container so that the berries will be in a single layer or hardly over an inch high. 

Wash Only Before Eating

They are not to be moistened, being filled with water, and become plush. After being washed they are to be patted dry (not to be eaten at once). This is done to turn the dirt on the surface of the berry off without any change in the texture of the berry which makes it juicy and delicious.

Handle Them Gently

The peel of blueberries is also delicate and easily ripped. Bruising is a condition caused by harsh handling and it leaks out the juice accelerating the process of spoilage. 

Freeze Extras the Right Way

They can also be frozen in case you are not in a position to use them within a week. Put the dry berries on a tray, spacing them such that they are not in a layer, and freeze them until they become solid. 

Keep them out of Bad Smells

The blueberries can absorb the odor of food in the vicinity. Do not expose them to the misery of foul foods like onions or garlic. They keep their natural sweet flavor with the help of storing them in a clean container and storing them in the fridge.
