How to Turn Everyday Houseplants Into Beautiful Bonsai at Home

You do not need to be an expert to grow beautiful tiny trees in your house. Many common plants can be trained to stay small and look just like old trees. It is a very rewarding hobby that anyone can start today with little effort. Watching your plant change over time is the best part. It makes your indoor space look much more interesting and green.

Choose The Right Plant

You will want a plant with a woody stem and small leaves because these look best when they are shrunk down. Ficus, jade plants, and even some types of rosemary work really well for this project.

Start With Pruning Roots

Take your plant out of its pot carefully. You need to trim the outside roots to stop it from growing too big. Do not cut off too many roots at one time. If you do the plant might get sick or die from the stress.

Trim The Branches

You need to pick the best branches to keep for a nice shape. Cut off any parts that grow straight up or down. This helps the tree grow flat and wide instead of tall. Trimming like this makes your regular houseplant look like a tiny tree.

Use Bonsai Wire Gently

You should wrap wire around the parts of the tree you want to move. Do not wrap it so tight that it digs into the skin of the plant. That would cause damage. The wire works like a guide for the branches while they get bigger and stronger.

Repot Into A Bonsai Pot

Place your trimmed plant into its new shallow bonsai pot making sure the roots are spread out nicely. Add fresh bonsai soil which drains well and provides the right nutrients.

Water Carefully

You have to keep your little trees hydrated but do not give them too much water because that is bad. Just touch the dirt every morning to see if it is still wet. If the top part feels dry you should give it a drink.

Provide Good Lighting

Plants need a good spot near a window to grow well. You should find a place with bright light that is not hitting the leaves directly. If the room is too dark your plant will look weak and the leaves might droop.

Fertilize Sparingly

Give your little plants a tiny bit of liquid food while they are growing. You must not use too much or it will hurt them. We want the plant to grow very slowly. Just use a small amount to keep it healthy.

Be Patient And Observe

You need to be patient because bonsai is not a quick task. Watch your plant carefully to see what it needs from you. This takes a long time. After many years your basic houseplant will look like a tiny tree and it will be very beautiful.
