Rao’s Homemade is a huge name in the pasta sauce world and many people swear by it for a quick dinner. I decided to test out several varieties to see which ones really stand out in the kitchen. Here is my personal ranking of these popular sauces from my least favorite to the absolute best.
Rao’s Four-Cheese Sauce Was My Least Favorite

I love cheesy pasta but this sauce had a really gritty texture and a weird tangy flavor that I just did not expect. Some people might enjoy the mild cheese taste but I think their Alfredo sauce is a much better choice if you want something creamy.
I Thought Rao’s Sensitive Marinara Was A Little Bland

This sauce is made without onions or garlic for people who have sensitive stomachs and need something a bit lighter on the digestion. It has some really nice juicy tomato chunks in it but I personally missed that classic garlic flavor that makes traditional marinara so good.
The Flavor In The Roasted Garlic Sauce Was Way Too Strong

This jar is absolutely packed with minced garlic which gives it a much rougher texture than the other sauces on the shelf. I felt like the garlic tasted a bit like the pre-minced stuff you buy in a jar instead of sweet roasted cloves but garlic lovers might totally disagree.
Rao’s Tomato Basil Sauce Certainly Lived Up To Its Name

This one was brimming with so much flavor that it honestly reminded me of eating a warm bowl of tomato basil soup. The strong basil taste was a little overpowering for my personal liking but it could easily be your winning sauce if you enjoy that bold flavor.
The Italian Sausage And Mushroom Sauce Was Disappointing

The mushrooms in this jar felt a bit rubbery and slipped around without adding much flavor to the overall mix. I was really hoping for some big meaty bites but the sausage was crumbled up very small and had almost zero spice to it.
Rao’s Caramelized Onion Sauce Reminded Me Of A Canned Soup

The onions added a nice little sweetness and gave the sauce a really good variety of texture in every single bite. I expected a lot more rich umami flavor from this one and found it to be a bit watery compared to the others I tried out.
I Enjoyed The Arrabbiata’s Subtle Heat

I really loved the subtle heat from the crushed red pepper flakes that hit the back of my throat. It was very rich and tomatoey without being overly spicy so it is a great choice if you just want a small kick with your pasta.
The Tomato And Herb Version Was Sweeter Than I Expected

I was expecting a really strong herb finish but the natural sweetness of the carrots and tomatoes actually shined through the most. The oregano and basil were pretty mild overall but I still really enjoyed this sauce and think it makes a fantastic alternative to regular marinara.
I Enjoyed Rao’s Bolognese Sauce

This hearty sauce is full of large meat chunks and smaller crumbles of beef and pork which gives it amazing complexity. The Romano cheese adds so much body and texture while a delicious touch of sweetness perfectly balances out the richness of the meat.
Rao’s Fire-Grilled Vegetable Sauce Was My Favorite

This winning sauce is absolutely packed with veggies like red onion and bell peppers that give it the most perfect umami flavor. It has that deep rich taste you only get when vegetables are cooked until they are wonderfully crispy and golden on the edges so I would happily eat this any day.
