It is fun to find new life for your garden when you see those pretty pots. Many plants look like a dream when they are sitting on the store shelf. Once they get into your backyard they can become a real problem. They grow over everything and hide your path. Try to avoid the ones that are known for being too wild and fast.
English Ivy

English ivy looks great on houses but it actually ruins your walls. The vine is way too strong for its own good. It digs into the bricks and can knock over fences. It grows fast and chokes your trees until they die.
Bamboo

This plant looks very calm but it is actually a problem. If you plant it in your dirt the roots will spread fast. It goes under fences and into other people’s grass. You will have a hard time stopping it once it starts moving around.
Wisteria

Those cascading purple flowers look like a dream but they can be a nightmare. The heavy vines are powerful enough to destroy your porch. You must spend a lot of time pruning. If you ignore it, the plant will grow wild and strangle your trees.
Mint

Mint looks nice but it is actually a huge bully in the garden. It sends out long stems that crawl under the dirt to steal space from other plants. Keep it in a container. Otherwise, it will spread across your whole yard and never leave.
Bradford Pear

Spring flowers make this tree look pretty but the smell is actually quite awful. Branches break easily and can fall on your house. It is an invasive plant that moves into new spots quickly. The sharp thorns it grows will eventually harm the local environment.
Japanese Honeysuckle

This plant has a very sweet smell that many people love. It looks nice but grows way too fast. The vines wrap around your trees and squeeze them until they die. It covers everything like a thick rug. Once it starts growing you can never stop it.
Butterfly Bush

Garden centers sell these to help bugs but they actually do the opposite over time. These bushes spread way too many seeds and crowd out the native flowers. Since baby butterflies cannot eat the leaves the whole group of insects struggles to stay alive.
Burning Bush

This bush is famous for having amazing red leaves in the fall time. People buy it for the color but it creates a big mess in the forest. It grows in thick groups that stop other plants from living. Many places have laws against it now.
Morning Glory

These vines look nice at the store but they are actually very sneaky. They drop a ton of seeds that keep coming back every single year. The vines grow tall and squeeze the life out of your flowers. It takes a lot of work to fix.
Periwinkle (Vinca)

This plant looks great with blue flowers but it is actually a problem. It grows so thick that nothing else can get through. It spreads into the forest and pushes out native plants. You should not plant it if you want a healthy yard.
