12 Forgotten American Dishes That Have Practically Disappeared

Food in America is not like it used to be long ago. Many old food recipes that our grandparents cooked have totally removed from today’s menus. They made odd jello salads and big meat meals. These forgotten plates show how kitchens have changed over time. It’s fun to look back at these classic dinners that people don’t really make for their families today.

Creamed Chipped Beef

This is just dried beef in white gravy on toast. Soldiers and poor families ate it a lot back then. Now you only find it in really old diners. It is very rare.

Mock Apple Pie

Back then apples were rare so people made pie with crackers. They used lemon and syrup for flavor. It is a shock that it tastes like real fruit even with no apples inside.

Ambrosia Salad

This is a sweet treat with fruit and marshmallows. It has coconut and cream inside too. People loved it at parties back then. Now kids think the soft feel is just way too strange.

Liver And Onions

Pan-fried liver topped with caramelized onions was once a weekly dinner requirement because it was cheap and packed with iron for the kids. Most people today can’t get past the very strong earthy flavor so it has mostly dropped off the family menu.

Tomato Aspic

Basically a savory red Jell-O made from tomato juice and unflavored gelatin this dish often had celery or olives floating inside. It was considered very fancy in the fifties but the idea of a cold tomato jelly just doesn’t appeal to modern tastes.

Salisbury Steak

This is just a burger patty shaped like a steak with brown gravy on top. It was big in frozen meals but most people just eat regular burgers or real steaks these days.

Waldorf Salad

Made with fresh apples and grapes mixed with walnuts and plenty of mayonnaise this salad was the height of elegance a long time ago. You might still find it at some very traditional delis but it isn’t the star of the show like it used to be.

Chicken A La King

This is creamy chicken and vegetables poured over hot biscuits. It was a huge hit at lunch parties for a long time. Now most people just have pasta because it is less heavy.

Ham Bananas Foster

In a strange twist of the sixties people used to wrap bananas in ham slices and cover them with a mustard cream sauce before baking. It is one of those sweet and savory combinations that luckily stayed in the past because it sounds pretty wild today.

Succotash

A simple mix of lima beans and corn that was taught to early settlers it became a budget-friendly side dish for centuries. Even though it is very healthy most families have moved on to other green veggies like broccoli or kale instead.

Potted Meat

This was a spreadable meat product made from different cuts and spices that people would put on crackers or white bread for a quick snack. It was super common in lunchboxes years ago but the mystery of what’s inside has turned a lot of people away.

Baked Alaska

This impressive dessert has ice cream on the inside and toasted meringue on the outside which is then baked quickly or torched. It is very hard to make at home without melting everything so it has mostly become a rare treat found only in fancy vintage restaurants.
